History & Heritage
Bringing history to life through film.
My first lesson in “oral history” began at home. As I listened to my mother and father describe their migration stories, I tried to imagine their journey of leaving their Indian home and family to rebuilding a new life in the UK. I was born shortly after, which began a new chapter in their lives of settling into British Asian Culture. As the community grows, so does a new history. This spurred me to discover new communities across the globe. Armed with a bicycle, video cameras and audio recording devises, I independently cycled across seven countries to document multi cultural identities culminating in a series of Arts Council commissions, artist residencies and digital installation work.
My current work specialises in working closely with Heriatge Lottery Fund, archives and communities where I have directed award winning drama and documentary films reimagining the history and heritage of today. My work explores cultural and political movements across the West Midlands including themes such as the commemoration of WW1, Holocaust testimonials, Birmingham Suffrage Movement, Chartist Movement, African and South Asian migration, social entrepreneurship and agriculture.
